Now that you understand the value of exercise routine and movement for your overall health and well-being, and how to set realistic goals, let’s talk about how to make it a consistent part of your routine. Remember, consistency is what drives success, and by consistently taking action, you’ll see consistent results.
I like to use the analogy of a stalagmite (bear with me for a second). A stalagmite is an incredible achievement created over thousands of years and yet started and continued with just a single drop of water. Right now, reaching your goals might seem like an insurmountable feat, however with consistency over time YOU WILL SUCCEED.
All you need to focus on is being consistent in your efforts. Now this doesn’t mean training every single day and never eating a slice of cake, all it means is being 1% better today then you were yesterday, and 1% better tomorrow then you were today.
Commit to consistency rather than the outcome and you won’t ever feel like it’s an impossible goal to achieve.
Now, there are 3 things you need to build a consistent routine. Get a pen and P.A.D and jot these down.
PLANNING . ACCOUNTABILITY . DISCIPLINE
Planning:
If you plan exercise into your daily schedule you are setting the intention to do it and will more likely stick to your commitment. See it as an appointment with your health & wellbeing investor!
Accountability:
When you are making a change to your lifestyle, you will often need someone more than just yourself to be accountable to. Imagine you’d pencilled in some time this afternoon to go to your favourite cafe for a coffee, but then it started raining. It wouldn’t take much at all to just say “Oh well, I’ll go tomorrow.” BUT what if you’d planned to meet a friend, you’d just shrug on raincoat and off you’d go!
This is why accountability is key to remain committed to consistency. So find yourself an exercise buddy, a workout pal or a fitness friend and plan to move more this week, together.
Accountability is also the most underrated aspect of why personal training is such a successful way of reaching your goals. There’s no secret workout formula that only personal trainers are privy to, it’s that we provide you with the structure, support and accountability to remain consistent in progressing towards your goals.
Discipline:
Discipline is the unspoken attribute of consistency. In order to remain committed to consistently progressing towards your goals, you need to have some discipline. Just like children hate their veggies and never want to eat them, every parent will insist because veggies are healthy, end of story. When it comes to things we don’t want to do, we revert to our inner child, procrastinating and coming up with wild excuses as to why we can’t exercise today. Without sounding like your mother… there are just some things we have to do in life, even if we don’t want to. So buck up and have a little self-discipline when it comes to committing to improving your health and wellbeing.
